As a small company, most of our pieces are made to order so we can minimize excess stock. For in stock items, your piece will ship 2-3 days from the order date. For custom pieces, please allow 4-6 weeks for your piece to ship. It’s very possible that pieces may be finished sooner though, so if you need it by a certain date, email us at hello@kathryntheyounger.com to inquire. We’re happy to assist.

For polished and plated jewelry, warm soapy water can be sufficient. You can also use a polishing cloth or silver polish. If your piece is set with stones, you may want to opt for a polishing cloth. You shouldn’t polish oxidized jewelry because that will remove the patina.

Patinas are ephemeral finishes and will eventually wear away. This is because a patina is just a coating on the metal, not a change to its inherent characteristics. Plating is also temporary, though longer lasting than patinas because it is a coating that is bonded to the metal. As with patinated pieces, though, it is advisable to remove your plated jewelry when bathing, swimming, etc and when applying lotions, sanitizers and perfumes. The best way to ensure that your patinated piece retains its color for as long as possible is to remove it when washing your hands, showering, swimming, etc. Any foreign chemical agent including hand sanitizer, perfume, lotion and the like can affect your piece’s patina so it’s best to remove your jewelry when applying these. Natural oils from our hands affect any material we wear whether metal, leather, fabric or wood, so keep this in mind when you see your piece begin to evolve into another color.

I find the whole process to be exciting, like a journey of discovery happening on my finger. If you’re not keen on the patina wearing away, get in touch and we can assist you with reapplication.
